"I have never taken a picture I've intended. They're always better or worse." - Diane Arbus (1923-1971)

I was hooked on black and white photography years ago, the first time I saw some Ansel Adams photographs of Yosemite National Park. I couldn't believe the subtlety possible in a monochrome medium. Robbed of distracting colours, the composer is force to create a focus point from texture, shadow and form. Suddenly less becomes more, and what you leave out of the frame can be as important as what you include.

Often what makes a good photograph is more about what comes out of your head than what is in front of your eyes.

This is the sister site to my portfolio on ‘AS Photography’. I try not to take myself too seriously here and post stuff that may not always be technically brilliant, but that holds interest for me personally. Who knows, some of it may hold some interest for you too...

"My best work is often almost unconscious and occurs ahead of my ability to understand it." - Sam Abell

"Anyone who fails to understand photography will be one of the illiterates of the future."

- Laszlo Moholy-Nagy (1895-1946)
