Workmen prepare to hang the lights which form part of Blackpool Illuminations, which run for some 10km of coastal road and consume over a million lightbulbs.
The first illuminations in their modern day form were first ready to switch on in 1939. However, the outbreak of World War II and subsequent post-war austerity measures meant they weren't illuminated until 1949.
The illuminations come in all shapes and sizes and themes, from Disney to the Daleks and involve design and construction teams to ensure variety with new designs every year.
